About us

The Modestful was born from a desire to reconnect modest fashion with it's values.

As Muslim women working in fashion and design, we kept finding ourselves in the same place, scrolling endlessly, filtering by long sleeve, high neck, loose fit, only to land on something that looked perfect… until you find out it was backless. Again.

What should’ve been simple felt exhausting. We’d spend hours trying to find something that honoured our values without compromising our style, and it left us wondering... Why does dressing with dignity feel like swimming against the current? Where was the space that understood both our faith and our fashion sense, without making us choose one or settle for less?

We knew we weren’t the only ones and we knew this wasn’t just about clothing. It was about the way modesty had been sidelined, treated as a seasonal trend, a niche category, rather than understood. The western fashion industry doesn't quite see us, not fully and not honestly.

So, we built what we were looking for. A space where modesty is the foundation, where women who wear their values are met with pieces that reflect that intention.

The Modestful is a marketplace made with same intention as the women it was created for, we curate fashion from values-led brands who design with women like us in mind.

Because at the heart of this, we want to celebrate the women who honour their faith, their values, and their individuality. We want you to feel confident in choosing modesty on your terms, with all it's beauty, grace, and confidence.

We built this for you and we’re so glad you found your way here.

Created by modest women, for modest women.

Ilham has spent over a decade in the modest fashion world, showcasing collections, working with women globally, and navigating an industry that so often misunderstood what modesty truly meant. Driven to dig deeper, she began a PhD focused on the cultural, spiritual, and commercial gaps in the industry to drive change in an industry that so often missed the mark of representing the women it was made for.

Saja, a Design Director cares deeply about creating a positive impact, she has always believed the most powerful brands are built with purpose, and has longed to channel her skills into something that would bring lasting change.

We briefly met in 2016 in Sydney while Saja was a young intern and connected over our interest in design and shared values. Saja went back to Brisbane and seven years later returned to to live in Sydney. We reconnected, and one conversation turned into hours. We shared our frustrations, our hopes, and the same unshakable belief: Muslim women deserve better.

Better representation. Better design. Better spaces to find fashion that reflects both who they are and what they believe in.

If no one else was going to build it. We would.
